Christine Widdall DPAGB was the popular judge for this evening’s difficult task; difficult due, yet again, to a high standard of entries. Christine had 52 prints and 26 slides to consider; not quite as many as previous quarterly competitions, but still a daunting task to produce constructive comments on all entries in the time available. She had not seen the images in advance and so took time out before judging commenced, to look through the prints to get an idea of the standard of the images entered. Christine commented that they were of a high standard and that we were going to have a wonderful exhibition next year. Let the judging begin The Prints were considered first. The first fantastic print was scrutinised and got 15 points for its author’s efforts. This set the standard Her criticisms were constructive and helpful to the authors. Typical comments were, “photographs were to busy”; “some objects in the image were to close to the edge of the print, losing the balance of the image”, “a conflict of bright colours from one side of the print to the other was off putting on some prints”, “some not as sharp as they could have been”, “some were too green and some too cold”. Christine made some interesting comments about border lines around the images, in that in some images an excess of lines conflicted with the image. She thought that a more subtle approach was needed to compliment the image. She also made the point “choose your mount colour carefully”. “Consider your mount as an extension of the photograph”. Are slides the way to go? They look great on the screen! There were some very interesting titles on the night, which occasioned laughs, and Tony Redford made himself known during the judging. Christine commented that he should have 5 points deducted for his insolence and that he should not be allowed out. The club’s mascot “THE CAT” showed itself again with Christine saying “I bet a cat will appear somewhere along the line. ” When it duly did the room burst with laughter. Congratulations go to both Dorothy Redford and Phil Riley for gaining a maximum 20 point’s for an entry. Some of the night’s entries were retained by Richard Scaife for display in the library in four weeks time. A well deserved round of applause was received by Christine Widdall for an excellent night of judging. President Richard Scaife expressed the club’s thanks. And Good luck to all those who have entered the L&CPU competition. Alan Saunders Final Point Totals
