The syllabus proclaimed that the title of the evening was “to be decided”, though Richard had indicated that both he and Barry had been to China, and inspired by Andrew’s talk of last week were emboldened to do a repeat involving this great country. The club’s digital projector was set up and the initial slides all seemed to be about different coloured squares. Was this a low pixel count view of China we wondered? No. Barry was endeavouring to optimise the colour rendition of the projector by scientific means. This projector does not have the means to adjust individual colours, and apparently has a slight yellow cast. An impromptu discussion with the audience appeared to suggest that turning up the brightness also made the light bluer, which was desirable. But Barry and Richard had gone to great trouble to modify the colours of all their images so that they would look right on the yellowish projector and the show proper began. Fourteen sequences of images were on offer and we managed to see nearly all of them in the time available. But whose images would we see first? Well Richard had a script (and a fancy LED light source to aid the reading of it) so we assumed that he would do the first half and Barry the second half. But no! Our speakers had got together and merged their offerings so that it was never clear who to applaud, or who to boo. So we followed the six mile walk through statues, visited Tiennaman Square, the Forbidden City and Shanghai; saw the 4th largest tower in the world (with the clouds floating by below) and the Oriental Pearl Television Tower. We had a section on crafts and industry, observing the making of silk rugs and the spinning of the silk; learnt that the second pouring of the tea was better than the first, and saw how copper wire was incorporated into pottery ; And much, much more! But a trip to China would not have been complete without a visit to the Great Wall (the restored bit and the crumbly bit) and a trip up the Yangtze River. So who needs to go now? We have seen it all!! Thanks to Richard and Barry. Bill Chadband |
