John Smith was our popular judge for this 3rd quarterly competition in which we had 73 prints and 31 slides entered. John was happy to judge all of the images in any order that the club wished. With such an unbalanced situation there is no clear-cut ‘half-time’ for the tea break. The general opinion seems to be that slides have a bigger impact than prints and should go second – to reverse the order would make the 2nd half more of an anti-climax. But would the members delay their tea break to, say, 9.30pm instead of 9.00pm? Apparently not, to listen to some of them!! . So John considered most of the images before the break, keeping a selection until after the break.
Many of a judge’s general comments are attached to the earlier images, (be they prints or slides,) and continued repetition is avoided later by much briefer references to background intrusions or inferior layout or composition. It became clear that 15 was the mark attached to the average good picture, with the select few being given between 18 and 20 marks after the break.
There is a much smaller time interval between projected slides, than there is between putting up and removing prints, and John dutifully finished his judging at 10.00pm. prompt. Having delivered his formal comments to the assembly in the Council Chamber, John gave his more informal ones over a pint in the Grapes.
