L&CPU Interclub Digital Print Challenge 2006

As a new venture, L&CPU held a series of competitions on Saturday 11th March at South Manchester CC’s venue in Didsbury. The events included an interclub digital print competition, which NCPS entered this year. The competition rules required that at least one club member attend and our delegation comprised Barry Pearson, Dorothy & Tony Redford, Joyce & Gordon Robson, and your competition secretary with a large box of prints.

Round 1 of the competition required 12 prints from at least 5 workers, at least 5 prints had to be monochrome and this was the most difficult of the conditions for us to meet. The prints were displayed in the usual manner and in random order. Three judges from out of the area scored using an electronic button system each awarding a mark from 2 to 5. Judging proceeded apace so images with immediate impact scored higher than those with a subtle content. Scores were computed by longhand arithmetic and confirmed with club representatives. NCPS with a total of 131 were placed fourth after South Manchester CC (144), Southport PS (139) and Oldham CC(132). The competition rules provided for the top eight clubs to go through to Round 2, but as only 8 clubs entered, the outcome was foregone. There followed a hectic 15 minutes in which we recovered our prints, decided on our Round 2 submission and completed two copies of the entry form. The stipulations on content were the same as in the first part and clubs could submit any or all of the Round 1 images again, or use others from an unlimited ‘bank’ ˜ hence our large box of prints. We replaced our low scoring images with others we thought would have more immediate impact.

Round 2 proceeded as before although with 15 images per club it took a little longer. Although no NCPS image achieved either of the two highest possible scores, our overall set maintained a good standard throughout and we finished with 172 points in second place behind Southport PS with 177. Our individual scores are given in the table and more information is available on the L&CPU website.

This pleasing result has an implication though, together with Southport PS, NCPS will be “invited” to participate in the PAGB print competition at the end of October at Connah’s Quay, Deeside ˜ please get those prints with “impact” ready, particularly monochrome images!

The “Three Competition Day”

The overall day included an interclub slide competition (won by South Manchester CC with Southport PS second) and the opportunity for individuals to attend and present four images for assessment against CPAGB or DPAGB standard.

The last event of the day was the new Individual Projected Digital Image Competition and 115 workers from the region entered a total of 458 images. These included Jonathan Bawden, as well as Dorothy and Tony Redford, I was present as an ‘independent witness’. Judging of these images was conducted as for the other competitions but at an even higher pace. The digital projection system worked well with the projector close to the screen giving a bright image.

I thought that the colour balance of the projected images was generally, but not always, very close to the equivalent print where I was familiar with that print. In discussion we learned that some entrants had been surprised by the appearance of their images and that this may be due to their having monitors profiled to a different colour standard.

After judging there was a long ‘social break’, of necessity as the judges and organisers had further work to complete. A total of 23 images had been awarded a maximum 5 score by at least one judge and these were projected again after the break with one of the judges giving their agreed comments in detail. The overall winning image and the complete set of four images from the individual with the highest aggregate score were also then projected. The evening ended with the presentation of awards including certificates to the authors of the 23 best images. Members will be pleased to learn that this group included both Dorothy and Tony Redford. Full details are available on the L&CPU website.
