Those Cheatin’ Photographers | |||

A Club member was recently holding forth on the debasement of true photography now that it was so easy to manipulate images (prints most directly, but also slides since they can also be produced from the altered images). The discussion originated from the suggestion that, as Digital projectors came down in price and increased in quality, digitally projected images would inevitably displace slides as a means of displaying images to an audience. [A separate discussion centred on whether NCPS should anticipate this eventuality by introducing competitions for digitally projected images; internally at first, but perhaps externally (inter-club) also.] Our hypothetical club member (lets call him Alan B, for the sake of the discussion), recognising the difficulty of always spotting that a manipulation had taken place, and not trusting that photographers would always be honest about the degree of manipulation they had employed, was searching around for some absolute way out of this difficulty. Out of the ensuing discussion came the obvious solution: NCPS should apply for another grant to purchase a Photography Integrity Meter. Authors entering digital images to a competition would simply lay their Right hand on the palm-plate of the meter and swear that this was a true image as recorded by the Camera. A green light flashing would indicate a pass whilst the Red light flashing could be accompanied by a mild electric shock of warning to the errant author. |
