Tillman Kleinhans Record Breaker | |||
|
On 31 January Tillman Kleinhans, our 2006 Exhibition judge came over to review the prints going into the exhibition and to indicate why he thought the “winners” justified their honours. By bringing the almost 200 prints back, Tillman saved the Exhibition Secretary a return trip to St Helens. Typically a competition judge manages 50 or 60 prints in an evening so we were agog to know how Tillman would choose the prints to comment on. He stated that he would keep back those prints given a “commended”, or better, until after the break, and first consider the other prints. Tillman is a popular judge, able to empathise with most photographers. He picks out the good points of a print and indicates how, in his humble opinion, the image could be improved, or strengthened. This positive approach puts the audience in a good frame of mind. In view of the many prints available he limited his remarks to a few main comments for each image, and fairly rattled through the pile of prints before him. We were amazed to discover that by tea-time he had commented upon all 150 of the prints; and so well deserved his interval drink. Dealing with the 46 prints left, after the interval was clearly a doddle. The evening finished on time at 10.00pm to great satisfaction all round. Bill Chadband |
