Members Evening 25th October - Self Portraits

One is never certain as to how these evenings will go. Richard billed it as a competition, and indeed discussed how the marking should be done. But in the general excitement marking was forgotten. Reflections were one way of getting a self-portrait and Jill added interest by reflecting herself in a mirror globe producing a pixellated image. Tony’s reflection put him amongst the Sun-Flowers. Gordon and John(have I got the name right?) showed similar images.

Alan Saunders gave us full-face plus both-profiles in one time exposure.

Barry Pearson after bending over his tripod in two images, caused consternation when he presented a “Picasso view” of himself. He followed this up with a disturbing image of his upside-down face on a head. We saw the image inverted first, and noted the face. When shown ‘ the proper way up’ the inverted face disappeared in the new face. To finish us off he presented an image of himself with an extra pair of eyes. It was hard to view this image since ones own eyes (and brain) had difficulty in deciding where to look. It was a most convincing demonstration of the importance of eyes in an image.

After tea/coffee to recover from this battering Bill chose an evolutionary approach to self-portraiture. Starting with his great-grandfather we saw how he had developed to become the strange person he now is. He used the Digital projector to present his short Pictures-to-Exe show.

Jon Allanson then introduced us to the AUDACITY Sound manipulation program, showing us briefly what it could accomplish. Such programs become ever-more useful as we exploit our Digital projector to produce Digital A-V presentations.

Altogether, a most enjoyable club night.
