It was a shock when President Richard Scaife announced to the 1st Digital meeting of the session that Rodney Simpson had died, apparently of Bronco Pneumonia. Joyce Streets, Gerald Hallworth and Bill Chadband represented NCPS at Rod’s funeral service (at Stockport Crematorium ) on Friday 7th October. We discovered that Rodney had worked in an engineering company and had been mad keen on his MGB car until the motor accident which damaged his spine and put him in a wheelchair at the early age of 28 years. He had coped with several changes of job but then had to cope with the loss of a leg, when gangrene set in. Rodney was fiercely independent. He became an active member of a rifle club, was an active member of NCPS (and a past President of our Club) and was even more active as Vice-chairman of Stockport Disability. Whilst Rodney was on the NCPS Committee, meetings were held at David Sharp’s house, being one of the few venues that gave Rodney convenient access. Not surprisingly he put much effort into promoting disabled access for all in Stockport Borough. I recall Rodney’s enthusiastic support and advice given when we planned a new ramped entrance and disabled toilet at Hawk Green Reading Room.. Despite some ill health and his disability Rodney continued his support for NCPS. He acquired a Computer and Printer and regularly produced tickets and membership cards for us. He also designed a Web site for Stockport Disability. It is still strange to think that Rod is no longer with us. He was only 58 years old. Our sympathy goes to his mother and sister. Bill Chadband |
