David Langridge – a Forthcoming Meeting

On 18th October David Langridge, a founder member of Hyde Photographic Society (in 1954) presents an evening based upon “glass based images from a turn of the Century trip”.

His wife, Mavis, inherited her grandfather Ainsworth’s photographic legacy and since then it has been their main aim to restore it and bring it to the attention of the Photographic, and Thameside communities.

Samuel Thomas Ainsworth (1860-1935) was a Hat Body maker, who had a small manufacturing business in Audenshaw. His photographic career lasted from the 1880’s to the 1920’s and included people and places; Towns, Rural and Countryside activities; with a special interest in Architecture and Historical Buildings. He also enjoyed travelling on the Continent and produced lantern lecture shows of some of these tours, together with “light entertainment” shows for local churches and organisations. Sam was an active member of the L&CPU for which he gave several lectures. He also entered some of his work for their Competitions and Exhibitions. Being a religious man he was organist and choirmaster at his local church. David notes that the following Lecture slides of Sam’s still exist:

France and the French Riviera,

A Tour of Belgium,

The Eaton Hall Estate.

Apparently, examples of Sam’s work can be found in the archives of Manchester, Thameside, Chester, The Duke of Westminster’s estate, The National Museum of Photography, Ypres, Bruge and Antwerp. His pictures have appeared in a variety of books and newspapers, and have even been used by a Professor from Newfoundland University.

Though David Langridge does not claim to have attained such heights, he was a regular contributor to Hyde Club’s monthly and Annual Competitions and is proud to possess the Best Slide Trophy for 1982, the last year in which the club held competitive exhibitions.

David intends to show Hats made by Sam, and Sam’s Plate Camera, together with other memorabilia when he visits on 18th October 2005.
