The Day Out with Sheffield P.S. Sunday 10th July 2005

It was a glorious day for the meet with Sheffield Photographic Society, this year organised by NCPS (well, by Gordon, really!) Gordon Robson, Bill Chadband and Alan Bromage delivered the Light Box and Projector to the Rising Sun, Hope; and returned with Frank and Margery Hutchinson to the Car park below Mam Tor for the start of the seven mile perambulation along the Ridge, back to the Rising Sun. The NCPS walkers also included Brian and Hilary Turnbull, Patricia Martin, Joyce Streets, Tony Rosevere and Steph Clack.

Tony Pioli, the competition judge, and his wife, joined the walk, together with several Sheffield PS members. Barry Pearson claimed that his boots were too far gone for walking, (He arrived in good time for the 4-00pm meal.) However one wonders if Barry had foreknowledge of some of Frank’s jokes and if this had influenced him! As we passed Hope cemetery on the second half of the walk Frank was heard proclaiming “Abandon Hope all ye who enter here”!

Dave Clack, Colin Pickles, Tony and Dorothy Redford, Joyce Robson and Milly Chadband joined the NCPS contingent for the meal and subsequent competition.

Four round tables, accommodating 9 or 10 people each, comfortably filled the private dining room.. Whereas NCPS had Tony Pioli’s ear on the walk, our judge sat with the Sheffield contingent for the meal. Sheffield had booked Tony for their recent Club Competition and were quietly confident until they learned that NCPS had also recently employed Tony as judge for their last Annual Exhibition. Being well acquainted with both club’s work Tony was able to be expansive in his remarks during his marking of the images before him.

Prints were taken first and NCPS were pleased to receive five 20 marks for images. This gave NCPS a lead of 339 marks to 315 marks at half time. Slides have often been the NCPS weak point, but on this occasion we were gratified to receive 20’s for four of our images which helped us win the Slide battle by 182 points to Sheffield’s 174.

Though it is pleasant to win a competition the main thrust of the occasion was to enjoy a day out on the hills, share a good meal with our Sheffield friends, and then mutually enjoy a feast of excellent images. We thank Sheffield PS (and their organiser, Keith Brown) for another happy occasion.
