The Committee meeting held 10 March 2005 | |||
|
The Annual Exhibition had again been successful. Perigrination had still not paid the agreed £50 sponsorship despite visits to the local office by Gordon. However we expected payment in due course. Geoff Robinson presented the Exhibition accounts. The profit on the event, as always, is due to the combination of sponsorship money and the three Raffles. Although Gordon has single-handedly managed the event of the past few years several of us feel that the exhibition has grown too large to be left to one person. The committee suggestion, that Tony Redford take it over, was countered by Tony in an ingenious way. Tony has, in previous years, turned down the idea that he be President. Noting that in the year 2006 he will have been 30 years with the Society, he felt that that would be a suitable occasion for him to serve as President. He also warmed to the idea that by being Syllabus secretary for the year prior to the presidency the President was responsible for his own program whilst in office. Therefore, of course, he could not entertain the idea of organising the Exhibition. Noting Bill Chadband’s smirk at this contrived evasion, Tony proposed that Bill should become responsible for the Exhibition. A gob-smacked Bill remained silent for the rest of the evening. Gordon Robson has produced several pages of notes re; the organisation of the Exhibition. He has whittled down the 54 club invites to a more manageable and relevant 38 clubs. The Alan Adshead trophy for the winning club in the inter-club digital competition is an all-glass affair. L&CPU President, Keith Suddaby had noted that there was no place for recording the names of past trophy winners. A suitable base was required. It was agreed that Bill Chadband would approach Geoff Heath, a retired British Aerospace design manager and latterly a keen Wood-turner, for his ideas. The suggestion that we should reverse the order of competitions (Interclub slide and interclub digital) met a mixed response. There were pro’s and con’s to the move. Perhaps the most important con was that the present arrangement was well fixed in the minds of other clubs and change could lead to confusion. The main reason for a change would be to allow a more leisurely, and therefore perhaps more competent, recording of the prints for projection by the Digital Projector. The public has only a restricted opportunity to see the Exhibition. The proposal that commended and winning prints be hung in the library for a period following the exhibition deserves further consideration. Because the Valencia trip now covers the proposed AGM night, the DATE OF THE AGM HAS BEEN MOVED TO TUESDAY 17TH MAY. Joyce Streets did not wish to continue as membership secretary and so a new secretary will be sought. Regarding next session’s syllabus it was agreed that meetings would commence on Tuesday 13th September in the Civic Hall Council chamber. We would continue to book the Poynton Community Centre for the first Tuesday of the month thereafter and continue with a digital series of some kind. Joyce Streets thought we should consider how we can build in more general discussion time to the syllabus The next Annual Exhibition is planned for 8th to 10th February 2006 and the suggested handing-in date is 10th January. Several members expressed disappointment with the cost and hotel arrangements of the last Christmas dinner. It was agreed that we would not organise one for next session. A meal after the Exhibition might provide an alternative occasion for a club get-together. Tony Redford and Geoff Robinson would assemble the Report now required for the Grants-for-All panel.
