Chapel-en-le-Frith Battle

I knew we were in for trouble when Tony Redford led us across the Equestrian Way instead of the Pedestrian Way as we crossed the road to the Conservative Club in Hayfield – the new home of Chapel-en-le-Frith CC. And were we really so foolish as to go along with Tony Pioli’s judgement when we were up against his own club, by chosing the best images according to Pioli?

The judge, Gordon Jenkins of Chorley, apparently a past L&CPU president and possible future one was introduced by chairman Ian Lang. We started with the slides, 10 from each club. It became apparent that the judge liked tightly cropped images and open doors. Ours were all shut. At the halfway stage, although image marks were generally fairly evenly matched, a couple of lower marks on our side meant we trailed by 172 marks to 182.

The interval gave us more time to become acquainted with June Hoyle, (their competition secretary she said) and Alberta Cook (originally from Doncaster). The bar was open for the thirsty. I counted about 45 people present including 9 from NCPS. These were Frank Hutchinson and Gerald Hallworth, Tony and Dorothy Redford, Gordon and Joyce Robson, Dave Akers, Bill Chadband and our competition secretary Roger Dye. The 2nd half was even more nail-biting and eventually the print competition was declared a draw at 175 marks each. Thus Chapel were the overall winners with 357 points to our 347. We saw an excellent set of images and the NCPS contingent went home almost as happy as the Chapel members.
