Committee Meeting Report - 1st Dec 2004

Treasurer Geoff Robinson reported that 42 members had so far paid their subscriptions for the new session. It was agreed that we should allow new members, particularly those we might hope to recruit from the Digital forum, to join for half price as we were now half-way through the session. Extra copies of the syllabus would be available at the Digital Forum for this purpose. It was agreed that next session, the handing-in week for the 1st quarterly competition would not be the 1st week of the session.

As there was some confusion regarding the payment of the tea/coffee money to Chris who manages the Community Centre at Poynton (and provides the refreshments for us), it was agreed that we would collect the 50p's at the door and pay Chris (as a block transaction) for the refreshments afterwards.

Colin reported that the nominal 40 for the Christmas Dinner was now down to 31. He wondered why this might be. Was the cost off-putting, or was it the venue, or what? Twenty two people had now signed up for the trip to Valencia on May 9th 2005; 10 twin rooms and 2 single rooms. The Airline was Jet2.com and the hotel the 3-star Caledonia Excelsior. It was a feature of this low cost airline that prices started low but increased with time as it filled up. Fourteen members had secured the £80 tickets whilst the rest, booing later, would have to pay £90. The single rooms required a supplement. If we were satisfied with arrangements this session, and wished to repeat an overseas trip by the same airline it was clear that we would need to get in quickly after the September opening of the bookings to secure low prices again.

Gordon reported on the Annual exhibition. He was inviting all the clubs on the L&CPU slide competition list (held recently at Poynton). It was agreed that for Beginners/Intermediates there should be one Open Section for Prints and one for Slides. A maximum of 5 prints and 5 slides would be allowed. Gordon felt we should standardize our mount sizes between quarterlies and the Annual Exhibition, making the maximum mount size 20 by 16 inches, and the minimum 10 by 7.5 inches ( or 75 square inches for prints not of the A4 format) Gordon had received 24 replies of which 20 were positive re the digital print competition and the inter-club slide competition. Noting that last time some print images were repeated as slide images, he felt that this was against the spirit of the competition though our rules had not expressly forbidden this (though the rules of many other clubs did rule against such a re-use of images). The committee spent an hilarious 20 minutes of its time endeavouring to produce a suitable wording for a rule to encompass this intention. Noting that we normally take down the Exhibition before members of the public have a chance, on the Saturday morning, to see it; it was proposed that we ask Poynton Council if they would be willing to bear the cost of the hiring of the Hall for the Saturday morning (and possibly early afternoon) to facilitate the public viewing.

Gordon and Joyce Robson were thanked for their hospitality

The next committee meeting was set for Wednesday 19th January, 7.30pm at the home of our President (1, Newstead Close, Poynton).
