L&CPU Slide Knockout Competition 2004

This annual event was this year hosted by South Manchester Camera Club and took place on home ground at the Civic Hall, Poynton, on Saturday 27th November. Over a dozen (I then lost count!) NCPS members were there to hear L&CPU president Keith Suddaby list the 24 clubs taking part and to welcome the Midland's Federation judge Malcom Kuss. Malcolm exuded a mixture of authority and light-hearted banter, noting that by the end of the evening 23 clubs would be after his blood. Malcolm knew all the old jokes (Venice is always flooded when he goes there! - He's not against birds on sticks!) plus a few new ones (We are seeing more and more elephants on Cannock Chase, and are becoming positively overwhelmed by Cheetahs!)

This was another competition where John Coles had used his computer to determine our entries and, as John was unable to be there, the NCPS contingent were, initially, unsure as to which slides were ours. At half-time (tea and mince pie time) Keith Suddaby read out the state of play. Two clubs still had all five slides in - NCPS only had two left. In the first round after the interval our last two slides were eliminated and our interest focussed instead on the raffle. Here we were much more successful. Dorothy Redford and Alan Bromage (or was it Jackie?) both had winning tickets; both returned with impressive bottles but sadly they had not thought to bring any glasses and so could not share their luck!

When the results sheet came out we discovered that:

Transo by George Beaumont went out in the 1st round

Indian Dance Troupe by E. Robbinson went out in the 2nd round

(Is this person any relation to G Robinson I wonder?)

Derwent View by Gordon Robson went out in the 2nd round

Puffin by Colin Pickles went out in the 3rd round

The Right Reaction by Dorothy Redford went out in the 3rd round

This gave us 11 points. After the 3rd round only 15 slides were left, reducing to 9 after the 4th round and 4 after the fifth round. The winning slide came from Chapel club. Before announcing the final club results Keith congratulated all the clubs and drew attention to the PAGB "Warwick" national inter-club competition. He hoped enough L&CPU clubs would announce their intention to participate to allow an initial L&CPU selection again (probably at Ormskirk, as in previous years).

He thanked the judge, and the host club for their fine efforts, and used the occasion to formally present PAGB gold medals to Ed Roper and Phil Charnack (received in his absence by son Christopher)
