Oldham CC visit Thursday 18th November

Three intrepid members, known to you as Chadband, Coles, and able driver Robson braved the dark, cold and snow to visit Oldham C C for their annual B&W print competition.

Yes dear reader there was snow on them there hills; but the main roads were clear and ice free. On arrival what a welcome, including a grand firework display. However we later found out it was not for us but for the turning on of the local Christmas shopping lights. This together with the inclement weather could be why there was quite a low turn out = which was a pity as we had a good evening made by the comments of our judge Andrew Rothwray from Halifax. We were fortunate to have Andrew’s presence as he admitted he had thoughts to turn back, but realised that proceeding to Oldham was the better option. It took him over two hours from Halifax to Oldham. What some people will do in support of their hobby!

Andrew is associated as an executive with the Yorkshire Photographic Union And Yorks Mono Group. Also his work his known on the salon circuit, both nationally and internationally. A very knowledgeable judge he proved too.

Lighting proved to be, as expected, the important ingredient to B&W and personally I learned a lot in the hour & half we were listening to Andrew. In addition shape & form and printing made their selves known when described by the judge.

So how did we do? Well club member we WON. Yes our three B&W entrants Colin, Gordon and Gerald did us proud. There should have been a cup, but this had not been returned by last years winners, and no one owned up to being a member of the winning team.

There were two other 19’s as I recall plus a single 20. This image was of a lady in a strange head on animal like posture, done up like a zebra. I felt I had seen a similar image somewhere previously but well done to the author for being so adventurous; it certainly stood on it’s own as an image on the night. I hope the lady in question was wearing some type of cat-suite as the time taken to create the scene in body paint must have been unbelievable. – What’s that I hear from the back ‘probably done in Photoshop’ go wash your mouth out this was real photography it’s a pity a larger audience was not available to see some real top class images which many people had put a lot of work into and a lot of care.
