NCPS Annual Exhibition 2006
A Portrait of the Peak District

by Tony Pioli ARPS, BPE5*

About the Presenter

Tony Pioli has been taking photographs since he was 10 years old and from the outset he developed a fascination for the natural world. His early experiments with developing and printing laid the foundation for a lifelong interest in monochrome photography. He was instrumental in the formation of Chapel-en-le-Frith Camera Club in1984 and it was after this, he thinks, that his photography really began to improve. He has moved with the times and though he still uses film he sadly reports that he has moved on to digital printing.

To further improve his photography, in the early 90’s, he set himself the challenge of joining the British Photographic Exhibition circuit. In 2001 he achieved the coveted BPE 5* and was informed at the time that he was the 17th person to be awarded this distinction. More recently he has been awarded the ABPE, only the 7th person to receive it. In 2000 he submitted a panel of Nature photographs to the Royal Photographic Society and was awarded an Associateship. During this period he has received more than 60 Awards for his nature and landscape images.

He has traveled widely in pursuit of his photographic interests and considers himself an all-round, general, photographer despite his fondness for nature. He also travels throughout the country delivering lectures. More recently he has embarked on a series of workshops or seminars in landscape and nature photography emphasising the importance of the “pictorial” approach and the need for good “composition” as prerequisites for the production of winning images.
