Article in "Inside Poynton"

As a summer event, two years ago I ran a treasure hunt around Poynton based on the plaques on many of the terraces. Members may be interested to know that I have used the photos that I took of the plaques as the basis of an article that has been published in the current edition (June-July) of "Inside Poynton". It is near the start, called "Upper Poynton".

I was really intending the words just as a base to hang the photos on, but the words seem to have taken over and the photos have been printed quite small!

For those outside Poynton, it can be seen (as a PDF) by looking at Inside Magazines and clicking the button marked "Poynton".

The NCPS Venice Trip – another view

There are no new pictures to be had in Venice – or so we were told. Maybe true if you are looking only for new architecture or “saleable images”. But we enthusiastic amateurs can usually find new pictures around every corner on these NCPS forays and so it proved to be the case in Venice.

We had the weather. Strong winds, heavy rain, big skies, sparkling sun. The challenge was to make the most of it.

Pictures were taken in the most adverse conditions.

Our first day saw non-stop rain. And the second day forecast was not encouraging. Some of us chanced a trip to Burano where it started off wet but gradually improved as the day went on. We even saw the sun.

And a good lunch was enjoyed by all.

The third day was a mixture of warm sunshine and showers with the odd thunderstorm thrown in. A waterbus trip up and down the Grand Canal proved popular, with stop-offs at the fish market by the Rialto Bridge and later an extended walk around the Salute Church area.

A recently installed sculpture provided an interesting challenge

They say “small things amuse….”

Those keen enough to get out early were rewarded by an atmospheric sunrise on the last couple of days.

It was quite galling to have to leave Venice in a hurry on a beautiful last day but the speedy water taxi back to the airport provided some final exhilaration.

I believe we all took plenty of pictures on the trip – not all of them winners of course but we should all have a good photographic record to look back on and to provide many happy memories. I’ve just uploaded a small selection of mine onto the web gallery and I hope others will submit a few sample snaps too.

Who said there are no new images to be had from Venice?

News and blog facelift

Over the next few months, before the next season, the website will undergo a series of facelifts. This is the first one.

The intention is to present a clearer, less "clunky", appearance to the blog. (The appearance is based partly on blogs on other websites). Also, the items in the blog, and the corresponding articles in the news archive, will be more consistent than previously.

Because the new format and the old format don't mix well in a given page, this change has been made at the start of a month so that no monthly blog archive has a mixture. This also explains why (just for this event) all items from the previous month have been cleared from the blog. They are available in the May archive, of course.
