VENICE 2010 (for urgent consideration)
I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Venice for 3 nights, Tuesday May 4th - Friday 7th.
Flights will be with Jet2 from Manchester. Provisional flight times are:
![]()
| Manchester | 06.45 | - | Venice | 10.15 | |
| Venice | 11.00 | - | Manchester | 12.30 |
The air fare will be between £90 and £100, depending on the price at the time of booking.
I am making arrangements with Peregrination of Hazel Grove who are currently looking for a suitable 3 star hotel for bed and breakfast in a central location.
We will need to pay the air fare as soon as possible to take advantage of the current price.
I hope to have more details and a booking form at our meeting on September 8th.
Please let me know if you are interested at that meeting, or before by e mail.

Images needed for interclub PDI competition with South Manchester
We have an interclub projected image competition at Poynton with South Manchester CC on Tuesday 29 September.
Jon Allanson (selection committee chair) needs images to select from. You can give them to him on Tuesday 8 or 15 September (the first 2 meetings of the new season). Give him a few of your best! (USB drives preferred).
Here are the guidelines for the images. (1400 wide by 1050 high JPEGs. sRGB colour space).

FOCUS on this website
Focus is our newsletter, free to members as a paper document if they want it. (The editor of Focus is Bill Chadband, of course, and he also writes many of the articles). From now on, it is also being published on this website as a PDF version, for online viewing or downloading and perhaps printing.
Each edition of Focus comprises a set of articles written by various people over a period of a month or two. These articles include competition results, notices and news, meeting reports, committee reports, etc. Each of them should already have been published on this website (in the blog and the news archive) soon after it was written. But some people prefer to read and/or save a collection of articles, and so want complete Focus editions. Making these available via this website is an optional (and cheaper) alternative to the paper version.
This Notice announces the first of these PDF editions - the August 2009 edition. In future, there will be a blog item to announce each Focus edition and provide a link to it. It will be uploaded about the same time that the paper edition becomes available. Earlier PDF versions will remain available in the news and blog archives page.
Some history
Focus used to be published on this website as complete editions (one per web-page), up to November 2004.
From April 2003, individual articles were published soon after they were written, initially as well as the full Focus edition, then after November 2004 as the only way articles were published on the website.
News publication was modified by creation of the "Members area" in August 2006, when a major improvement was to split the articles into categories: "Committee reports", "Notices and news", "Meeting and events reports", "Member's competition results", etc.
In January 2009, the blog replaced the Members area page as the method of announcing news articles. It continues to use approximately the same categories. So anyone wanting to see Focus articles soon after they are written should read the blog frequently, at least once per week and even up to 2 or 3 times per week. Later, those articles will be published again as part of PDF Focus editions.
(The blog also includes items that are not published in Focus because they have a short useful life, or primarily identify changes to the website itself such as new galleries).

Library Display August 2009
To publicise the start of our new season, our digital workshops and our involvement at Poynton Show, a display of prints (plus notices and syllabus) has been placed in Poynton library. We expect a large proportion of visitors to the library will admire the varied images on display and take note of the invitations to come along to our meetings.
A good number of our members contributed prints so that we could make an impressive selection for this display AND hold a sizable pile back for use at Poynton Show. Thanks to everyone who was able to spare some of their prints for these good causes!

Bolton Digital PS - Summer Print Exhibition 2009
Received (some time ago) from Mark Power, Bolton Digital PS:
"Bolton Digital PS are pleased to announce the launch of their Summer Print Exhibition 2009. The exhibition, which is now open for public viewing, is being held at Westhoughton Library and features nearly 200 prints taken by our members. The display runs through until Friday 21st August and can be viewed anytime during normal library opening hours (see info on our web site).
"The exhibition is spread over two floors with a small display in the main library (near to the stairs), with the bulk of the display on the mezzanine floor at the top of the stairs.
A new feature of this display is the “Viewers Poll”, which allows members of the public to vote for their favourite prints using an electronic voting slip on our web site. One person will win a bottle of bubbly for predicting the three most popular prints in the display. All names of people agreeing with the three most popular prints will be placed in a hat and the winner drawn out. All votes received on or before 23rd August will be included.
"Log on to our web site for more information and follow the link on the home page."

Jon Allanson has achieved BPE2*
(BPE2* = British Photographic Exhibitions Two Crown)
Jon regularly submits work to the members of the BPE, and recently reached an accumulation of 50 acceptances. He must now always be addressed as "Jon Allanson LRPS CPAGB BPE2*"!
Since Jon is the Chair of our Selection Committee, perhaps some of this expertise will rub off on the club.

Prints needed for our displays - Poynton Library and Poynton Show
Just a reminder that we need a selection of prints for the library and for our stand at Poynton Show (old or new and size doesn’t matter).
The library display goes up on 24th August (10.00am) for a couple of weeks, and Poynton Show prints are needed at the show ground on Friday 28th August (6.30pm).
If you are able to spare any prints (no obligation of course!) for either occasion it would be good if you could get them to me anytime soon. (I’ll leave the porch unlocked if I’m not in).

If you intend to show up with them at the venues and on those dates perhaps you could confirm to me by e-mail (see right) so we know what to expect.

Getting ready for the new season
The Committee has been preparing for the 2009/2010 season for some time. The recent Committee meeting discussed progress and agreed further actions. Some of the results are now visible on this website. There are many details, but here are some major ones:
- Syllabus - both online and as a downloadable PDF file for printing; the rooms are booked, and there are just one or two details still to be confirmed later in the season.
- Membership Application Form - some people have already applied by post and received their confirmation by email!
- Updates to the competition rules - both online and as a downloadable PDF file for printing.
- Exhibition - we have dates and the rooms are booked, and judges booked for member's work and the inter-club digital print competition; (the Friday evening entertainment is still being decided).
- Poynton Show - see the recent Notice about our role as official photographers and the need for volunteers.

Committee Meeting 29 July 09
Sixteen members of the new committee met at the Hazel Grove Bowling and Tennis Club for the first meeting of the new session.
Richard Scaife was co-ordinating our input to the Poynton show. As ever, volunteers were required to help out on the day. Contact Richard, directly. Tony Redford reported that 28 NCPS members were booked to go to Keswick in November. Competition Secretary Phil Riley reported that judges had been booked for all but one of our forthcoming competitions. Bill Chadband reported that Tony Pioli would be the next Annual Exhibition judge. John Cartlidge had agreed to judge the inter-club digital print competition on the 10th February 2010. Bill reported that the latest Focus was ready to be sent out in the August mailing inviting members to rejoin for the new session. 29 members had indicated that they did not require a paper copy in future. 8 members asked that they continue to have paper copies. He awaited further instructions from the rest of the membership. Jill reported that only one member, Colin Pickles, had so far re-joined. All future members were reminded that they could not enter club competitions if they were not current members. John Garner reported that Poynton Post would have an article about NCPS. President Roger Dye circulated his draft syllabus for the new session, to be sent out with the August mailing.
Barry Pearson agreed to update the Competition Rules, once we had decided what they were to be. There was uncertainty as to whether Digitally projected images and Slides were to be lumped together for awards, or to be judged and awarded separately. After discussion it was decided that , for this coming session, at least, they would get separate awards.
Treasurer Geoff Robinson reported on the Clubs finances. Selection committee chairman Jon Allanson would be away for the first two competitions. The selection committee consists of Jon, Geoff Robinson, Roger Dye, and Dorothy or Tony Redford. Tony Redford would take charge of our entry for the Keswick competition. It was agreed that we should endeavour to put in our strongest entry, rather than share the entry amongst as many as possible of those members going to Keswick. Jill reported that presently she has the Lap-top, Bill Chadband has the scanner, John Garner has the Spyder, and Roy Cheetham the lights. Roger was thanked for providing the refreshments.
The next meeting was set for Wednesday 30th September 09 at 7.45pm, same venue.

Poynton Show 2009
The August - September edition of the local ‘glossy’ “Inside Poynton” has just been delivered and it includes an article about Poynton Show illustrated on the cover and inside by images we took last year as official photographers at the Show.
We will be filling that role again this year and help from more members would be much appreciated. The range of subjects is vast and you get privileged access giving you opportunities not normally available to a spectator. With a reasonable group of us, there should be time to enjoy the Show as well.
We will be having our society stand in the Creative Hobbies Tent again and we will need one or two members to be there in shifts throughout the day to answer questions and hand out our syllabus information.
Our stand contains an exhibition of our prints and we simultaneously put on an exhibition in Poynton Library, so we need a good supply of prints. Ones from previous shows, or demonstrating digital photographic techniques, would be especially welcome. Please let Tony Redford or Richard Scaife have some prints in plenty of time for the Show (Saturday 29th August) - I shall be away until then.
Those of you who can help, please contact Richard Scaife (01625 878269) for information, meeting times, etc. I look forward to seeing you all at the Show.
Oh, and by the way, the image on the cover of Inside Poynton is mine.
ps: This issue of "Inside Poynton" is currently (5 August) available as a PDF at the "Inside Magazines " website.
