Poynton Library want some prints from us!

The library has an event on Friday and they would love to have a selection of NCPS prints to brighten up the wall. In addition to doing them a favour at short notice, this would be good additional publicity for us of course. The prints could remain in situ for a week or two.

The short notice presents us with the problem of collecting material. It would be good if a number of your stand-bys (not necessarily new stuff) could find there way to me or Jill by Thursday morning (2nd July). As a suggestion, we shall be at the Grapes from about 9.00pm on Tuesday and happy to see you there with your contribution. Don’t worry if you can’t get anything to us – we should be able to find enough from somewhere!

The Home page is being updated

To show that this website is active throughout the summer, the Home page will be updated every time a new gallery is uploaded. It will use examples from the most recent 3 or 4 galleries to link to those galleries.

So keep those galleries coming! Give a set of images (each one at least 550 pixels on the longer side) to Tony Redford, perhaps based on some theme. Galleries work best if there are a multiple of 4 images, (because there are 4 thumbnails in a row), so 16 images (say) are good. But this isn't a rule - do whatever forms an attractive gallery.

Facelift for the "Photo-opportunities" pages

I've given the "photo-opportunities" feature a facelift. The previous single page was getting unwieldy, and it was unsuitable for extending into next year.

There are now separate pages for "venues" and "events". The "events" page begins at the start of the current month, with earlier months archived. This makes it easier to expand into future years. There are still links to these pages from the Diary, the Syllabus, and the A-Z & Search page. (Should there be more links?)

I typically give the postcode for each venue/event, for use with a Sat Nav, and to enable the weather to be forecast via this Met Office page which accepts a postcode.

Distances and times are sometimes given from both Hazel Grove and south Birmingham. The latter is probably of use only for people who sometimes stay with relatives in that area - perhaps just me! (It should not be a surprise that some of the venues are a long way from Hazel Grove but not so far from Birmingham).

For all club work, I've decided to abandon all photographs I took before 2009, so I am busy re-building a set of useful photographs. I am making heavy use of these pages combined with the Met Office forecasts. You don't have to go to China, Kenya, Galapagos Islands, Japan, etc. There are interesting photographs to be taken in England. Gosh!

Visit to Victoria Baths 9 June 2009

Twenty members and friends gathered at the Baths at 7.00pm to be welcomed by Steve, one of the 2.4 paid staff of the Baths. Steve gave a brief introduction and then a guided tour, before leaving members free to wander and find the prize-winning shot. The café was open for tea and cakes, and the shop open for business, manned (or should I say womanned) by Trustee, Chandon, who had been active in the 1990’s trying to keep the baths open, and was still active in the Restoration process. We were pleased to welcome ex member John Coles and his wife Carol, newly returned to Poynton after his two term contracts in Switzerland.

Steve recounted the many ways in which the fabric of the building had been restored, and the continuing problem of raising funds to continue this work. The building had featured in several TV series (for example providing the mortuary scene in a Sherlock Holmes play), and the Turkish Baths facility was in regular use by professional footballers anxious to quickly recover from muscular injuries. An up-to-date account of the Victoria Baths may be seen on their WEB page www.victoriabaths.org.uk. Steve and Richard Scaife counted the members out again at about 9.00pm, before locking up the building. Richard is to be congratulated on his organization of another successful Club outing.

Attention - those who visited Victoria Baths yesterday

We will soon publish a gallery on this website of images taken at the Victoria Baths on 9th June. Please quickly send your best image to Roger or Tony for them to select from, ready for uploading in about a week. Their email addresses are on the right. (To avoid spam, the addresses are not machine-readable and so will have to be typed-in).

Send a JPEG with the longest side at least 550 pixels, which is the size used in our galleries. They will be reduced to this size if necessary, but please don't overload their email services by sending images larger than the 1400 x 1050 pixels we use for our competitions, or with a file size greater than 300 KB.

Thank you. (And thanks to Richard Scaife for suggesting and arranging a trip which attracted so many people, and to Steve Helme of the Victoria Baths Trust for his orientation tour).

Keswick Update

We now have confirmation from the Derwentwater Hotel that the deposits sent on behalf of the 28 visitors from North Cheshire have secured our accommodation as requested for 6th & 7th November.

We are delighted to have a number of first-timers joining the group on this occasion. Should anyone require any information about the weekend, please have a word with me after the start of the new season.

As well as our own large contingency, record numbers from South Manchester C.C. have also booked in.

Consequently the hotel is now fully booked over the period which means, unfortunately, that any late-comers will be disappointed unless there happens to be a cancellation.

I’m sure we can all look forward to a good break, a successful competition and some unique autumn colour on which to expend some film (or digital exposures as the case may be).

"Photo Opportunities" page continues to evolve

Every week or so I check the "near future" items in the Photo Opportunities page, and revise and republish it accordingly. Sometimes this just changes a few details. Sometimes a new venue is added along with a number of events.

If you are interested in such information, it is probably worth checking at least once per week.
