Rosalind Bramley Competition
Rosalind was a noted member of NCPS and a keen monochrome worker. When she died her husband, John, presented a trophy in her memory. John proposed that the trophy be for a monochrome pictorial competition to be judged by the members themselves. Jill Hargreaves and Jonathan Bawden have taken the competition and made of it the occasion that John Bramley intended. The prints are collected in advance (this year there were 39 entries), numbered, and exhibited in sequence on the Print Box, before being placed on tables around the room for closer inspection. This year’s competition was held at Hazel Grove Bowling and Tennis Club which provides more room than the Council chamber (and has the advantage of a bar next door) .
In the first round members were asked to select the best four prints and enter the numbers on the Round 1 slips. Whilst the most popular six prints were being ascertained we had our refreshment break. The Round 2 judging slips were then distributed and, following another showing of the “best six”, members were asked to assign marks 1 to 5 for each print. The marks were collected by a show of hands for each possible mark, for each print, with the following results:
| Title | Author | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| On the Beach | Colin Pickles | 87 |
| Spiral Ascent | Gordon Robson | 90 |
| Relic | Dorothy Redford | 91 |
| Trees and Clouds | Karen Heathcote | 92 |
| Dockland ReDevelopment | Gerald Thompson | 93 |
| Winters Day | Gordon Robson | 113 |
Gordon was presented with the Trophy and his winning monochrome will grace the front of the next Exhibition Catalogue. President Tony Redford congratulated Gordon, and thanked the organisers for all their work.
L&CPU print competition
He then invited Jon Allanson to talk about the L&CPU print competition.
Jon noted that 2300 prints had been submitted and judged by three external judges each marking in the range 2-5; giving a score range of 6-15. Those scoring 11 or more were sent to a selection Sub-Committee to be either used in the PAGB competition, or else put in the L&CPU Folio, available to all L&CPU Clubs. Jon had brought along those relevant NCPS entries for members to see. Geoff Robinson(2) and Jon(1) had scored “elevens”. Martin Currie(2), Colin Pickles(1) and Alan Saunders (2) had scored “twelves”; whilst Gordon Robson(1), Martin Currie (2) and Alan Saunders(1) had scored “thirteens”. The President thanked Jon for his contribution to the evening.
