Third Clubworker Competition 11 December 2007

Mike Lawrence, President of Oldham PS was the judge for this competition. To be on the safe side he had brought his minder, Christine Widdall with him. As Tony Redford explained, welcoming them both, we had best be nice to Chris since she would be judging the Annual exhibition images. Secure in this back-up Mike announced that he was going to be brutal in differentiating between the various images. Perhaps aware of all the eyes on him he noted several times that eyes must be sharp in an image – they are inevitably a focal point for the viewer. He felt that authors could make the mistake of having too much in an image, which dampened its impact. Titles were important in that they helped to focus the judge’s mind on the author’s intent. And speaking of Tents he had a penchant for Sheds!

With a little help from Christine, Mike finished his task nicely at 10.00pm. John Garner proposed the vote of thanks. He was pleased with the way Mike had approached his task. It was clear that first impressions were important in such a competition. Mike had noted that in some cases images grew on him, in time, but in these competitions time was of the essence.
