The Day out with Sheffield Club

On Sunday 12th August at 9.30 am, having met at Hazel Grove Car Park the NCPS contingent proceeded to Crich National Tramway museum. An initial shower threatened to put a damper on the 40’s day but a mixture of sun and high white clouds produced a perfect day for the visit. Initially unsure as to what a 40’s weekend entailed I soon discovered it was about dressing up in Army. Navy or Air Force uniforms, complete with tents, horses and jeeps.

Dickie and Dennis (E.N.S.A.) gave several concerts with their Ukuleles (pictured left.).

Keith Brown confessed that he was smitten by Miss Lola Lamour who sang several times at the A.R.P post. (right).

At 12 noon a cavalcade of military vehicles drove down tramway street, and shortly before we left for the Rising Sun at Hope Winston Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery inspected the troops, (and thanked the people for their unstinting war effort).

Leaving Crich at about 3.30pm we arrived at the Rising Sun in good time for a drink prior to the 5.00pm meal. By common consent, the meals were excellent, and put us in good humour for the evening’s event. In a change to last year’s proceedings we compared Prints only; 20 from each side. And instead of an interclub competition we had two intra-club  duals, with Sheffield’s President Jim Chorlton judging the NCPS prints, whilst Our President Tony Redford commented on their prints. And they intermixed the process - alternating one from each side. This of course changed the nature of the event and it became important that members all had print entries if they were to be in with a chance of winning the bottle of wine for the best club entry.  We saw a good variety of prints and it was interesting that both judges chose a bicycle image as the best of a club’s entries. Tony chose “Sunken Bicycle” by Helmut Kohler, having dallied with a possible alternative winner of two cormorants. Jim chose “Raindrops are Falling” by Martin Currie as his best. This was a faint image of a bicycle seen through a glass heavily spotted with raindrops.

He commented that it was either a low scorer or the highest scorer, but having gone through all twenty it was the one which stayed in his mind, and so had to be the winner. He then revealed that Tony’s alternative (2nd best) was his (Jim’s) own print!

In thanking everyone for another good evening Keith Brown apologised that only six Sheffield members had made it to the meal. He thought that a July meeting next year might improve his club’s attendance. Tony Redford thanked Keith, and Sheffield Club, and noted that the day was one well worth repeating. He thought the new format had worked well. NCPS members attending were Roger Dye, Barry Pearson, Colin Pickles, Phil Riley, Jon Alanson, Martin and Jenifer Currie, Joyce Streets and Hugh Oldham, Frank and Margery Hutchinson, Bill and Milly Chadband, Richard and Penny Scaife, Tony and Dorothy Redford.
