Motion to authorise and instruct the Committee to change and publish the rules for the 2010 Exhibition
As follows:
- To allow the entry of digital images for projection as well as slides and prints. The file format would be the same as that for projected digital images in Clubworker competitions, although the filenames might be different. The total number of projected images (digital images plus slides) that a member could enter would be the same as the number of prints that member could enter. Projected digital images would be judged in a similar way to slides and prints, with similar awards.
- Slides would be restricted (as with Clubworker competitions) to “original film images or film duplicates”
- Other existing relevant rules would extend to projected digital images, for example the “5 year limit” rule and the “no repeat of the same image” constraint.
- The maximum number of images that can be entered (currently 5 slides and 5 prints for Intermediate workers, or 8 slides and 8 prints for Advanced workers) is to be determined by the Committee in plenty of time for each Exhibition, rather than being specified in the rules themselves, but with a minimum of 4 for Intermediate workers and 5 for Advanced workers.
Justifications:
- The reason for proposing and voting upon the above principles rather than the revised rules themselves is that it will take time and effort to make the rules clear, concise, and unambiguous. The Committee believes that the above principles are sufficient for a vote.
- Projected digital images have proved popular in Clubworker competitions, and it is reasonable to expect that they would be popular in the Exhibition.
- When digital images can be projected directly, there is no reason to allow digitally mastered slides. Removing the option emphasises the special nature of slides.
- The current maximum numbers of images tend to be excessive, but it is hard to predict well in advance what the numbers should be. They depend on the judge, the size of the membership, conditions at the Exhibition known only closer to the date, etc. In the case of Intermediate class, the numbers depend on how many people are entering work in that class in Clubworker competitions and the amount of Exhibition space likely to be available for them.
