The 10th annual competition was held at Deeside College, Connah’s Quay on Saturday 28th October. Southport PS and North Cheshire PS represented L&CPU at this event. Tony and Dorothy Redford needed to arrive before 10.00 am to hand in our selection. Other club members attending were Dave Akers, Barry Pearson, Frank Hutchinson, Phil Riley, Roger Dye, Joyce and Gordon Robson, Milly and Bill Chadband. Judging is an inexact science, as is the process of selecting suitable prints. It soon became obvious that we had not read the judges’ minds when our first print up, The Great Sand Sea, received a 9. Our second print The Balcony scored a 12, but was followed by another 9 for Sense of Scale., and an 8 for Ferruginous Buzzard (This image having done well in the Southport Competition). We were now clearly not going to make the top eight of the 32 competing clubs. Our other scores were Fantasy Fishing 11; The Walk Way 11, Road Rage 10; Back to the City 14; A Different Approach 11; The Window Pompeii 9; On Parade Prague 10; Tree Tentacles 11. We were thus in the Plate Competition. And it appeared that judges were marking down Landscapes and Record shots and marking up images inferring some social commentary. A look through the many prints Tony had brought along resulted in our collective endorsement of three new prints together with our best performers from last time. Our scores in the Plate competition were: |

Oxford PS won with 68 points. Southhampton CC were second with 63; Bakewell and Eryri clubs third equal with 62. Southport, Nottingham and Dumfries clubs were fifth equal with 61 points. NCPS were 8th equal ( with Tamworth) scoring 60 points, Twenty four clubs competed in the Plate competition so, although we were disappointed at not being in the top eight of the main competition we felt we had not been disgraced and there was still the Raffle to cheer us up. The top prizes of Leather Chair, Epson 800 A4 printer, and Tripod went quickly, but then Phil Riley’s number came up, followed by Dorothy’s. They chose A3 paper. Finally, when all seemed lost Bill Chadband had a winner. By now there were only Books left. Still, “PhotoShop a retouching Cookbook for digital photographers” looks interesting and is probably worth more than the £5 he spent on raffle tickets! . PAGB President Rod Wheelans ran the proceedings with good humoured efficiency. The PAGB are to be congratulated on a successful event. Bill Chadband |
